What can I expect with clear aligners?

At your first visit, you’ll receive your aligners and learn how to insert and remove them. You’ll wear your clear aligners 22 hours a day unless otherwise instructed. A set of trays is usually worn for seven days before switching to the next set, only if your teeth are tracking (fitting) properly in the current set of aligners. If they’re not, stay on the last tray and call the office. Initially, you may notice an increase in saliva, a change in how your bite feels, or a temporary lisp. These are completely normal and nothing to be concerned about. You may also experience some initial discomfort, but this usually subsides within a few days. Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed to manage any discomfort.

What can I eat with clear aligners?

While nothing is off-limits, be sure to take them out before eating, and clean your teeth thoroughly before you put them back in. Most aligner patients need attachments bonded to their teeth to aid in the fit of the aligner and the movement of their teeth. These attachments can be broken off if you bite or chew on something very hard. Broken attachments could delay your treatment. It’s always a good idea to keep your case handy to keep your aligners safe while you eat. While it’s encouraged to avoid any drinks besides tap water, just be sure to remove your aligners should you choose to do so. Always remember to brush your teeth thoroughly before you put them back in.

How should I care for my clear aligners?

Keeping your clear aligners clean is essential to maintaining good oral hygiene, preventing stains or odors, and ensuring your treatment stays on track.

When cleaning your aligners, we recommend:

  • Cleaning aligners when you brush your teeth.
  • Using a separate soft-bristle toothbrush with water and non-abrasive hand soap to clean aligners.
  • Avoiding toothpaste, as it can scratch and cause buildup.
  • Rinsing with lukewarm water after each cleaning.
  • NOT using denture cleaners or mouthwash soaks. They can discolor or damage aligners.
  • If you can’t brush before wearing aligners, rinse your mouth with water before putting them in.

What if I have an emergency?

If you lose or break an aligner, let your orthodontist know right away. Aligners should be worn in a particular sequence. Your orthodontist is the best person to call to advise about next steps and whether a lost aligner will extend your treatment time.
