What type of orthodontic treatment is best for straightening teeth?
The type of orthodontic treatment that is best for you will be determined by the orthodontist at your consultation. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and goals.
How long will treatment last?
The length of treatment differs for each patient depending on their unique situation. Treatment time generally lasts anywhere from 6 months to 2 years; however, it depends on how much correction your teeth and bite require. Our goal is to move teeth and correct bites as quickly as the body will allow, with your safety and oral health as a priority. Here are some tips to help your treatment progress as quickly as possible:
- Adhere to proper brushing and flossing as directed by your orthodontist, and see your general dentist for your regular six-month check-ups during orthodontic treatment.
- Adhere to your orthodontist’s recommendations on eating with braces or clear aligners. And, always brush after you eat.
- Adhere to wearing elastics as instructed.
- Keep scheduled visits with your orthodontist.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
Keeping a healthy smile shouldn’t be out of reach. We know everyone’s situation is different; that’s why we offer a variety of payment options to fit your needs. We accept most major dental insurances and have affordable options for patients who don’t have insurance. We offer free consultations and can discuss a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
How often will I see the orthodontist during treatment?
If you have metal or ceramic braces, you can expect to see your orthodontist at regular intervals – often every six to ten weeks. At these visits, your orthodontist will check your progress and address any issues. They may also adjust your wires or change them out, giving you the chance to choose new colors for your brackets.
Those with clear aligners can go a bit longer between visits. This is because you are typically sent home with multiple trays with instructions on when to switch them out. Checking in with your orthodontist at regular intervals is still needed to confirm the aligners are doing their job correctly. With both routes of orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist also checks in on the overall health of your teeth and gums to help you maintain a healthy smile throughout your treatment.
Do braces hurt?
There can be some initial discomfort when braces are placed, or for a short time after braces are adjusted, but this is temporary. It usually begins around dinner time the day you get your braces on, and typically lasts about a week. Everyone experiences discomfort differently. We recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate discomfort.
Do I need to see my general dentist while I am in orthodontic treatment?
Yes. It is extremely important to continue seeing your general dentist during orthodontic treatment. They provide you with professional cleanings and check-ups, as well as keep an eye on your overall oral health. Visit your dentist at least every six months, or more frequently, if recommended.
Will I need to wear a retainer after braces or clear aligners?
Yes. Retainers are to be worn 24/7 for the first six months, removing your retainers only to eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Then, based on the guidance from your orthodontist, you will wear your retainers at nighttime for a lifetime to maintain your smile.
When can I start my orthodontic journey?
Based on the initial exam at your free consultation, our family of experts will customize a treatment plan tailored to your needs. In most cases, we can offer same-day treatment to avoid you from having to take additional time off work or school.
